Opening Odds: St Louis -110/8.5

The most important series going on right now wraps-up Wednesday night, as the surging Milwaukee Brewers go for the three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Milwaukee has put themselves within a half-game of the first place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, while dropping the Cardinals a half-game behind the Colorado Rockies for the second wild card spot after last night’s 12-4 triumph. National League MVP-candidate Christian Yelich collected a career-high six RBIs, including a three-run blast, in Tuesday’s victory – Milwaukee’s fifth in six games. Yelich has reached base in 12 straight games against St. Louis and is 15-for-32 with 10 extra-base hits and 15 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak overall. The Brewers clinched the season series and home-field advantage should the two meet in next week’s wild card game. The Cardinals have lost two straight after winning six of seven, and their remaining schedule doesn’t get any easier. After the finale with the Brewers, St. Louis heads to Wrigley Field for three against the Cubs to close the regular season.

Pitchers: Brewers – Jhoulys Chacin (14-8, 3.61 ERA) | Cardinals – John Gant (7-6, 3.53)

Jhoulys Chacin has been Milwaukee’s most consistent pitcher this season, but is winless in four starts this month, and hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning in any of them. Chacin allowed three runs over four innings in a no-decision at Pittsburgh last week, serving up a pair of home runs in the process. He is 1-7 with a 6.10 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) against the Cardinals, who have hit him for 17 runs (14 earned) in 20.2 innings across four encounters this season.

John Gant hasn’t been much better than Chacin and has issued 21 walks in 30.2 innings across his last six starts. Gant pitched just 2.2 innings against San Francisco last time out, allowing one run, four hits, and three walks in a no-decision. He is 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA in four games (two starts) against the Brewers.

I would be inclined to take the Cardinals in this one based on how bad Chacin has been against them, but Gant is struggling with his command and the Brewers have a terrific lineup that will take advantage of that. Look for a Milwaukee sweep here as the NL Central gets really interesting.

Pick: Brewers +100
