The New York Yankees had an enormous opportunity to take a commanding 2-0 lead in their American League Championship Series with the Houston Astros on Sunday, but couldn’t come up with the clutch hits in the late innings. Carlos Correa blasted a walk-off home run on the first pitch he saw from the Yankees’ ninth reliever of the night – J.A. Happ – and the Astros squeezed-out a 3-2 win to even their best-of-seven series up heading back to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for Game 3. Correa’s homer came in the bottom half of the 11th inning after New York’s Gary Sanchez struck out with the bases loaded to end the top of the inning. Brett Gardner had two of New York’s six hits Sunday while teammate Gleyber Torres is now 9-for-22 in the playoffs with six extra-base hits and nine RBI. Correa also had an RBI double in Game 2 for Houston and Jose Altuve is 10-for-27 with three homers this postseason. Houston will try and steal a game on the road when they send righty Gerrit Cole to the mound to face Luis Severino.

Cole is immune to losing and has carried that momentum over to the postseason where’s he’s already posted two dominant starts. He limited Tampa Bay to one run on six hits and three walks with 25 strikeouts across 15.2 innings in the ALDS. Cole, who is 18-0 in 24 starts since May 22, gave up three runs over seven innings in a no-decision against the Yankees way back on April 9th.
Severino should be fresh after starting only three games during the regular season because of injuries and in his four games, including Game 3 of the ALDS against the Twins, he has posted three scoreless outings. One of those scoreless outings came last week when he limited the heavy-hitting Minnesota lineup to four hits and two walks over four innings with four strikeouts. Severino was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA over two starts against Houston in 2018, but the Yankees lost both games he started against Houston in the 2017 ALCS.
I’m taking the under in this one because Cole is in such a groove, that I don’t even think this Yankees lineup can hit him. Severino’s arm is fresh and he’s been terrific in his limited action this season. Houston is only hitting .214 this postseason and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in Game 2.
