After Five Games, Who Will Win the Premier League?

Manchester City have won every match, yet Arsenal remain the favorites. Five games cannot settle a title race, but the results and the chances behind them offer an early answer.

You would not book the open-top bus in September. Manchester City have taken 15 points from 15, though, and Arsenal are three points back after Brighton beat them 3-0. There are 33 matches left for each club and ample time for any prediction to become embarrassing.

So whose start would you trust? The table gives one answer. The latest football betting markets ask where both teams are likely to stand when the season ends.

City’s Perfect Record Has a Complication

That longer view is visible in Betway’s Premier League football Betting markets. Arsenal are 2.05 to retain the title and City 2.50 to reclaim it. City lead today, but the prices invite a closer look at how both teams have played.

Opta’s expected-points analysis puts Arsenal first and City second based on the chances created and conceded in each match. The sports data company estimates that City have collected 5.8 more points than those chances would normally yield. That does not erase five victories. It does ask how often City can find a winner when the chances are closer than the points suggest.

Consider their 5-3 win over Sunderland. Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick in defeat and Sunderland generated 3.57 expected goals by Opta’s measure. Erling Haaland scored City’s fifth, completing a remarkable set: he has now scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced. His 117 goals in 137 league appearances give City a formidable answer in difficult matches. He cannot stop opponents creating chances at the other end.

There is a qualification. City have spent 52.5% of their league minutes ahead, more than any other side. A team protecting a lead has less reason to chase another goal, which can affect its expected numbers. Enzo Maresca’s players have also shown they can rescue a match. Against Bournemouth, they trailed until Marc Guéhi equalized in the 84th minute, then Joško Gvardiol won it in stoppage time. The underlying numbers deserve attention. So does that composure.

Arsenal’s Case Survives One Bad Afternoon

Brighton’s three goals made a loud argument at the Amex Stadium. Arsenal had conceded only once in their first four league matches, then lost 3-0 to the division’s most prolific attack. You cannot wave that away as an inconvenient statistical blip. Fabian Hürzeler’s team found ways through a defense that had looked secure.

Across all five games, however, Arsenal’s foundation remains strong. Their expected-goal difference of +4.44 is the league’s best. Opta’s title model gives Mikel Arteta’s side a 43.7% chance of retaining the trophy, narrowly ahead of City’s 39.8%. Even after Brighton’s win, Arsenal’s work across the opening month keeps them firmly in the conversation.

They have already recovered from a difficult position this season. At Sunderland, David Raya saved a penalty and Bruno Guimarães scored after coming off the bench to preserve their winning start. The Brighton defeat now tests Arteta’s response, especially with City ahead. It does not cancel the work Arsenal did in the other four matches.

The Chasers Have a Different Question

Liverpool are unbeaten under Andoni Iraola, although three draws in five games have left them six points behind City. Alexander Isak’s winner at Bournemouth was his fourth league goal, one fewer than Haaland. Betway lists Liverpool at 1.61 for a top-four finish. Given the early gap to City, securing a Champions League place is the more immediate race to watch.

Brighton demand attention of their own. Their 16 goals lead the league, and beating Arsenal gave their start a result the contenders must take seriously. Opta still gives them a 4.2% title chance, compared with Liverpool’s 5.7%. Brighton’s attack deserves admiration without five games being treated as proof that they will win the league.

The Pick, With Plenty of Football Left

Haaland also strengthens City’s case in football betting markets beyond the title race. Betway prices him at 1.40 to finish as top goalscorer, with Isak at 8.00. City have the leading scorer and maximum points. Those are persuasive reasons to back them, particularly after Arsenal’s heavy defeat.

City’s title probability has risen 20.2 percentage points since preseason in Opta’s model, more than any other club. Arsenal’s has also risen three points despite Brighton. Their closest rivals’ early stumbles have strengthened both contenders’ positions.

Haaland makes City awfully tempting. Arsenal remain the narrow pick. Their chance creation and defensive record across five games support the case more strongly than one afternoon at Brighton weakens it. City have already put three points between the teams, and Haaland can turn a tight match with one touch. If Maresca reduces the chances his side concede, this September prediction could age quickly. For now, Arsenal have just enough evidence on their side.
